The cause and effect model of NLP- one of the most powerful distinctions in NLP is this .. You are either at cause in your life… or at effect of it. This was a hard truth for me to swallow 23 years ago when I first learned NLP. With my mental health spiralling and feelings of low self worth being very familiar, living at effect was the only way I knew. It was also the only ‘choice’ I thought I had. At effect sounds like: ‘They made me feel like that.” “My boss stresses me out.” “The kids just push my buttons.” “I can’t focus because there’s too much going on.” “I’d be confident if I had more experience.” “When things calm down, then I’ll feel better.” “That comment ruined my whole day.” ‘I’ll have a bad day now because I’m late’ ‘I want to but.. Effect is reaction – Effect is when your emotional state is being dictated by circumstances, other people or old patterns. It’s waiting for life to happen ❌ Blaming others or circumstances for your unhappiness ❌ Reacting instead of pausing ❌ Handing your power over often unconsciously.❌ Metaphorically I think of being at effect like a leaf in the wind being blown about by whatever direction the wind chooses, rather than the roots of a tree being grounded and steady. At cause sounds like: “How am I responding?” “What meaning am I giving this?” “What choice do I have here?” Cause is ownership. When you shift from effect to cause, you shift from powerless to powerful. You move from triggered to intentional and release yourself from being stuck. Same situation – different response. Most people are waiting for external factors to change before they change. So they don’t change. NLP shows you HOW to live at cause and how to be in the driving seat of your life not the passenger. This was a revelation for me when I was 28 years old and I thank my lucky stars everyday that NLP has been who I am for the last 23 years.
